I may not listen to this band every hour of every day like I did when I was 16, but I still love them. They are easily set in my top ten favorite bands. Whether you care or not, I want to share my Dirty Heads story with you. My freshman year in high school, my best friend showed me the movie Surf’s Up. Not only do I love penguins, but I realized that Surf’s Up has one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. When Cody Maverick was making his surf board after fighting with Z, a song starts to play. The first time I heard that song play, I instantly fell in love. I needed to know what song it was and who sang it. I automatically pushed pause on the movie and looked up the soundtrack of Surf’s Up. Stand Tall performed by the Dirty Heads. That’s all I needed to know that they were going to change my life. When I got home that day, I downloaded every song of their’s I could find. I showed them to my friends, I drove my family crazy by listening to nothing but DH. I was hooked. After listening to them for two years, I finally saw them live at Red Rocks in the summer of 2010. Since then, I have seen them five times. The best time I had was at the Summit Music Hall in Denver, CO. March 12th, 2011. Jared started telling the audience about how they had been choosing fans from the audience to rap the “Buenos Noches” verse of I Got No Time on stage with them. I know that verse, along with every other DH song, like an artist knows his painting. My friends and I went nuts, and Matt tried getting Jared to pick me from the beginning. But first, Jared picked a girl from the front row. She got up on stage and said about eight words before she choked. Matt finally got Jared’s attention and pointed to me. I got picked to get up on stage with the Dirty Heads. I ran down the stairs and through the crowd as fast as I could. When I got up on that stage my heart was about to explode out of my chest and all over the band. J had said the whole band had noticed me singing every word to every song so far in their set, so they had confidence in me. He handed me the mic and Duddy started playing the music. I got about a quarter of the way through the verse and then I looked up at Duddy B. I got starstruck and stopped saying anything. They gave me a second chance and started the music from the beginning. The second time around, I got about half way through the verse but my nerves got the best of me and, once again, I choked. I was so unbelievably disappointed in myself! I felt like I had let my heroes down. I got back up to my friends and we all lost our minds and enjoyed the rest of the show. When the show was over, I just stood in my spot, unable to say anything. I realized a dream I never knew I had came true that night as I let a few tears of happiness fall. We left the venue and went to the side of the building where the band would exit to their tour bus. Matt came out and I thanked him for choosing me to get up on stage, and apologized for letting them down. He told me I did amazing and he signed one of my shirts and a drumstick I had caught from him a few months before. We asked him if we could go inside to meet the rest of the band, but they were already on the bus. So naturally, we went to the bus and asked to see them. The security guy wasn’t going to let us, but then he recognized me. Jared was the only one who came out and he gave me a big hug and said I did a great job. We talked for a bit, but then they had to take off. We wished him a happy birthday and left. Later on in June, DH was headlining the Journey’s Backyard BBQ tour in Denver and, of course, my friends and I had to make it. We were walking through the fairgrounds when we saw them eating. We didn’t want to be those annoying fans who wanted to talk while they just wanted to have lunch, so we walked by and just said what’s up. All they said was hey until Dustin said, “Isn’t that the girl that we picked last time we were here?” Ha, he fucking recognized me! Some of the best moments of my life have happened because of this one band. They have saved my life without even knowing it. I can proudly say that I’m a dirty headed kid at heart, and it’s all because of them.

Allow me to explain how much I love Led Zeppelin.
